About
A non-profit research project built for the organizations that need it most.
Cyber Secure Dashboard is built by Heartland Science and Technology Group, a 501(c)(3) non-profit scientific research and engineering organization focused on solving technical challenges of national, local, and public interest.
At a glance
- 501(c)(3) non-profit — unencumbered by competing interests
- Founded in 2017 with DHS and University of Illinois
- Initially funded by the U.S. Department of Defense through MxD
- DoD Iron Bank compliant designation for hardened delivery
How the project started
The Cyber Secure Dashboard project began in 2017 as a collaboration between the Department of Homeland Security's Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute (CIRI) at the University of Illinois and Heartland Science and Technology Group.
Initial funding came from the U.S. Department of Defense through MxD (Manufacturing x Digital, formerly the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute) as part of the Factory Operations and Industrial Control Systems Cyber Security Project. The original challenge: helping small and mid-sized defense contractors meet DFARS 252.204-7012 compliance requirements with practical, accessible tooling.
Since then, the platform has expanded to support NIST SP 800-171, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, CMMC, and sector-specific profiles for water utilities, public safety, and manufacturing organizations. In October 2024, the platform's container images completed the DoD Iron Bank security testing program and achieved compliant designation — meaning every deployment uses container images that have been hardened, tested, scanned, and approved through the DoD's own security pipeline.

Hardened, tested, and continuously scanned.
The platform's container images completed the DoD Iron Bank security testing program in October 2024 and achieved compliant designation. Organizations deploying Cyber Secure Dashboard receive container images that have been hardened, tested, scanned, and approved through the DoD's own security pipeline, with daily vulnerability scanning continuing after approval.
